The Whitesboro Parks and Recreation Department hosted its tenth community art show, now known as the Shauney P. Lucas Community Art Show, March 10th through 12th at the Jimmie O. Rector Community Center. PARD Director Penny Renfroe declared the event a great success. “We exhibited a total of 157 pieces of art from 48 different artists. We are so grateful to the local artists for submitting a great variety of art for the community to enjoy! We are really blessed to have such talent here, and fortunate to be able to display some fascinating pieces of art! We have several local professional artists that participate each year! What a treasure we have right here in Whitesboro!”
This year the show added a new component: people’s choice awards! Visitors attending the Friday evening reception cast their ballots for favorites in the drawing/painting, photography, and youth categories. At the end of the evening, awards were presented.
Abby Hilliard’s drawing “Hank (Papa)” was chosen as the favorite drawing/painting.
Reagan Renfroe’s photo “Zink” was the people’s choice for photography.
Mckinnon Larcombe, age 15, won the award in the youth category for her painting “Horse in Color”.
In addition to the entries from community artists, there were photos by Shauney Lucas on display. This was an opportunity to publicize the Shauney P. Lucas Memorial, and photos are available from Shauney’s family to raise money for the fund that grants scholarships. Anyone interested may still donate to that fund by contacting Karen at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The show began on Friday evening with the reception for the public to meet the artists. Renfroe said, “I personally enjoy the artists’ reception because I get to meet the talented people of our community and ask them about their work, their history, and the perspective of their different pieces. It’s also gratifying to hear the older artists encourage the younger artists! And I think the chance to compliment someone on their work is rewarding! It’s always meaningful to the artists to see that people notice and appreciate their work!”
The reception was co-hosted by the Whitesboro History Club. “The ladies of this organization add so much to this event by hosting the reception. We are so fortunate to have them as co-sponsor for the art show! They are great hosts for the entire weekend,” added Renfroe. The show continued on Saturday and Sunday with an opportunity for the public to view the display.
The Parks and Recreation Department’s first art show was held in 2008. The fourth show held in 2011 was renamed for Shauney Lucas, a PARD employee and local artist that was killed in an accident in 2010. Renfroe added, "We enjoy providing an opportunity to celebrate the creativity and talent of our community. Having organized the first Community Art Show with Shauney, it's such a fitting way to remember her and to continue to be inspired by her life and her talent!"

The Whitesboro Parks and Recreation Department (PARD) is receiving donations in memory of Whitesboro resident Roger Wilcox. Roger umpired baseball and softball for the department’s youth leagues for several years. In every circumstance, Roger donated his wages back to the program to be used for registration fees or equipment for needy children.
Roger passed away on September 28 after a lengthy illness. The community of Whitesboro will miss his dedication to his community, his friendly smile, and his willingness to help those in need. The department’s staff is indeed grateful to have known him and to have had an opportunity to work with him.
The PARD is honored to receive donations to be used for scholarships and equipment for its youth baseball and softball league. Anyone desiring to make a donation can mail the PARD at PO Box 340, Whitesboro, Texas 76273. Those interested in more information can also call the office at 903.564.5964 or visit the Jimmie O. Rector Community Center at 400 Wilson Street, Whitesboro, Texas 76273.
